Restoration
Prairie
- Over 150 acres have been converted from row crop production to native tall grass or short grass prairie at the Merrimac Preserve.
- Restoration is also underway at the Lansing Preserve to return native species to the area.
Wetland
- Wetland restoration activities include removing drain tile, filling or plugging man-made drainage ditches and creating shallow wildlife scrapes on over 50 acres at the Merrimac Preserve.
Oak savanna
- Oak savanna was once the dominant land cover type in this part of Wisconsin and is now one of the most endangered habitats in south central Wisconsin. We are in the process of a 40-acre oak savanna restoration at the Merrimac Preserve.
Woodlands
- Over time untended woodlands can become degraded and over-run with invasive species and shrubby undergrowth. Riverland Conservancy is actively working on forest management plans for the Merrimac and Lansing Preserves.
Stream
- Manley Creek is a spring-fed creek that flows from Devil’s Lake State Park. Restoration of Manley Creek included re-contouring of stream banks and installation of lunker structures on a ½ mile stretch of Manley Creek to create brook trout habitat. The project was completed over several years with help from the Wisconsin DNR, Operation Fresh Start, Wisconsin Conservation Corps, and Trout Unlimited.
